Let's Put It To a Vote

Last night, I got a hankering for soft butter on toast with strawberry jam.  Is there anything better than soft butter?  There is not.  But soft butter takes time.  You have to plan ahead.  In anticipation, I took a stick of butter from the fridge with the intention of leaving it out overnight so it could get nice and soft and spreadable in time for breakfast.

Lily loves to explore whatever happens to be left out on the kitchen counter while we're asleep.  This provides the perfect time for her to be mischievous without the threat of the water-filled spray bottle we use whenever she climbs somewhere she should not be or starts scratching the furniture.

Thinking myself rather brilliant, I put the butter in the toaster oven, so it could soften without Lily sticking her adorable nose in it.

This morning, I awoke, eagerly anticipating warm toast, soft butter, and sweet strawberry jam.  I went to the toaster.  No butter.

"JOE!  Did you use the toaster oven?"

"No, but I took the butter out."

"Why did you do that?  I left it out to soften."

"Well, you didn't tell me that."

"You wouldn't assume that if there is butter in the toaster oven that it was done deliberately?  Why would anyone put butter in the toaster?"

"I was wondering the same thing."

"Why didn't you ask me?"

"You were asleep."

"So you found butter in the toaster and never thought to yourself I might have done that for some special reason?  You never thought you should err on the side of maintaining the status quo, just in case I had some reason for deliberately putting butter in the toaster?"

"No.  I just thought you were off your rocker."

So now I have a question for you.  You find butter in the toaster oven, your significant other is otherwise relatively sane and is unavailable for questioning.  What is the appropriate course of action?

Updated to add: This has certainly been eye-opening.  So many of you are wrong.

Would you like me to send you a nice french bread basket for an aesthetically pleasing soft butter place holder? That's where we keep ours when we buy a baguette and need a quick swipe of delicious soft salted butter.

I would wake you up and ask why the butter was in the toaster. Because that's the kind of wife I am.

Also, we use tupperware to keep the pets out of food on the counter :)

Sher - you had me at French. Anonymous - tupperware would have been way too easy and obvious! The toaster oven was right there. :-)
